How far apart New York and Tokyo really are

The difference between these two zones is not a single number. Across 2026 it takes 2 different values — 13 hours, 14 hours — because New York observes daylight saving and Tokyo does not.

Period in 2026Tokyo is
1 Jan – 7 Mar 14 hours ahead of New York
8 Mar – 31 Oct 13 hours ahead of New York
1 Nov – 31 Dec 14 hours ahead of New York

Working-hours overlap

There is no overlap between a 09:00–17:00 day in New York and the same window in Tokyo — the zones are 13 hours apart. A recurring call has to sit in one side's early morning or late evening, so the fair arrangement is usually to alternate which side absorbs it.

Why you should store the zone, not the offset

Because the gap between New York and Tokyo changes during the year, an offset recorded as a number is only correct until the next transition. Store America/New_York and Asia/Tokyo — the IANA identifiers — alongside any time a user entered locally. The identifier carries the zone's entire history of rule changes, so a date from 1995 converts with the rules that were in force in 1995.

Internally, keep the instant as a Unix timestamp. The epoch value is identical in New York, Tokyo and everywhere else; the zone is applied only at the edges, when a human needs to read it. The current Unix timestamp is at the top of this page, and the zones versus offsets guide explains why the distinction bites.

Frequently asked questions

What time is it in Tokyo when it is 9:00 am in New York?

9:00 am EST is 10:00 pm in Tokyo. The full hour-by-hour table on this page covers every other hour of the day.

How many hours ahead is JST of EST?

Right now Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of New York. The gap is not fixed: across 2026 it takes 2 different values — 13 hours, 14 hours — because New York observes daylight saving and Tokyo does not.

Is JST to EST the same conversion in reverse?

Yes — subtract instead of add. If Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of New York, then New York is the same interval behind Tokyo. The grid on this page reads in both directions, which is why /jst-to-est leads here rather than to a separate page.

When can New York and Tokyo meet during working hours?

There is no hour when both cities are inside 09:00–17:00 — the gap of 13 hours is simply too wide. Any shared call has to fall in someone's early morning or evening; the shaded bands in the grid above show which end is least disruptive.

Does New York or Tokyo observe daylight saving time?

New York does: in 2026 it moves to -04:00 and back to -05:00. Tokyo does not — it stays on UTC+09:00 all year.
