How far apart Los Angeles and Berlin really are
The difference between these two zones is not a single number. Across 2026 it takes 2 different values — 8 hours, 9 hours — because both Los Angeles and Berlin observe daylight saving, but they do not switch on the same dates.
| Period in 2026 | Berlin is |
|---|---|
| 1 Jan – 7 Mar | 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles |
| 8 Mar – 28 Mar | 8 hours ahead of Los Angeles |
| 29 Mar – 24 Oct | 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles |
| 25 Oct – 31 Oct | 8 hours ahead of Los Angeles |
| 1 Nov – 31 Dec | 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles |
Note the short periods above (8 Mar–28 Mar, 25 Oct–31 Oct). That is the window where one zone has already changed its clocks and the other has not. It is the single most common source of missed meetings between these two places, because the offset people carry in their heads is briefly wrong by an hour.
Working-hours overlap
There is no overlap between a 09:00–17:00 day in Los Angeles and the same window in Berlin — the zones are 9 hours apart. A recurring call has to sit in one side's early morning or late evening, so the fair arrangement is usually to alternate which side absorbs it.

Why you should store the zone, not the offset
Because the gap between Los Angeles and Berlin changes during the year, an offset recorded as a number is only correct until the next transition. Store America/Los_Angeles and Europe/Berlin — the IANA
identifiers — alongside any time a user entered locally. The identifier
carries the zone's entire history of rule changes, so a date from 1995
converts with the rules that were in force in 1995.
Internally, keep the instant as a Unix timestamp. The epoch value is identical in Los Angeles, Berlin and everywhere else; the zone is applied only at the edges, when a human needs to read it. The current Unix timestamp is at the top of this page, and the zones versus offsets guide explains why the distinction bites.

Frequently asked questions
What time is it in Berlin when it is 9:00 am in Los Angeles?
9:00 am PST is 6:00 pm in Berlin. The full hour-by-hour table on this page covers every other hour of the day.
How many hours ahead is CET of PST?
Right now Berlin is 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles. The gap is not fixed: across 2026 it takes 2 different values — 8 hours, 9 hours — because both zones observe daylight saving but change on different dates.
Is CET to PST the same conversion in reverse?
Yes — subtract instead of add. If Berlin is 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles, then Los Angeles is the same interval behind Berlin. The grid on this page reads in both directions, which is why /cet-to-pst leads here rather than to a separate page.
When can Los Angeles and Berlin meet during working hours?
There is no hour when both cities are inside 09:00–17:00 — the gap of 9 hours is simply too wide. Any shared call has to fall in someone's early morning or evening; the shaded bands in the grid above show which end is least disruptive.
Does Los Angeles or Berlin observe daylight saving time?
Los Angeles does: in 2026 it moves to -07:00 and back to -08:00. Berlin does: in 2026 it moves to +02:00 and back to +01:00.
